What is minimally invasive spine surgery?

Minimally invasive spine surgery is any technique that allows the surgeon to perform surgery with less disruption to normal tissue.  Although this also usually means a smaller incision, it isn’t always the case.  In fact, the total incision size may be almost as large, but be in a different spot to minimize the muscle disruption.  On the other hand, the surgery might also be able to be performed using an endoscope, which is a camera on the end of a flexible tube, and uses very small incisions.  You may not be a suitable candidate for a minimally invasive surgery.  The only way to find out is by consulting with your surgeon.
