Cyberknife

What is Cyberknife surgery?

Cyberknife surgery is a type of radiation used for many different cancers in any part of the body.  It delivers high-dose beams of radiation from a nearly unlimited number of directions with very high accuracy.  This minimizes injury to the surrounding healthy tissue.  This differs from traditional radiation, which uses lower doses of radiation over longer periods of time, and with less precision, potentially injuring normal, healthy spine or brain tissue.

Benefits of Cyberknife surgery?

  • Accuracy – Sub-millimiter accuracy allows treatment of many tumors with minimal harm to surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Flexibility – Cyberknife can treat tumors anywhere in the body, including the brain and spine, and from almost any angle.
  • Continual Imaging – Cyberknife continually tracks patient movement and tumor position and automatically corrects the treatment delivery without interruption of the treatment.
  • Patient comfort – Cyberknife provides a pain-free, non-invasive alternative for patients.

 Who can have Cyberknife surgery?

Almost any patient can have Cyberknife surgery, as long as their disease process is a good candidate.  The neurosurgical conditions that can be treated are meningiomas and other benign tumors, malignant tumors of the brain including metastatic tumors, pituitary tumors, spinal tumors, and certain vascular malformations.  To see if you are a good candidate, contact Dr. Mobley’s office for an appointment.  If he thinks you are a good candidate, you will be referred to a radiation oncologist at Anova Cancer Center where a collaborative treatment plan will be created with Dr. Mobley and you, the patient.
